Elusive snow in the Peaks

This past weekend was our first residential weekend of the year.  We were working as usual with the Peak Park Conservation Volunteers, but the weekend was a little disrupted – not so much by snow as by the constant forecast of possible heavy snow!

Plans for our activities therefore had to be altered but nonetheless we were able to work on Saturday on the removal of a fence which had previously been part of a project to protect an important habitat for water shrews.  The land is no longer grazed by livestock so the need for the fence has gone and access to the brook’s bank has been restored.

By Sunday morning the snow was starting to fall so, with our other activities having been cancelled, we had the chance of a walk to enjoy it!

Post-and-rail fencing on the Middlewood Way

On a lovely stretch of the Middlewood Way near Schoolfold Lane (SJ932809), SACV volunteers were today working with Ed the ranger to carry out repairs on post-and-rail fencing along the path.  We were able to enjoy not only the fine autumn weather but also the flourishing wild flowers along this stretch (including cornflowers, corn chamomile, corncockle and corn marigold).  The rangers have been managing and improving this wild flower area over recent years, with help from a legacy in memory of a local person, and it’s developing beautifully.

“Giving Nature a Home” festival

This weekend has been the RSPB‘s Giving Nature a Home Festival in the Mersey Valley.  As part of this, SACV volunteers were out in Chorlton Water Park yesterday to undertake a practical conservation task and help those attending the festival see the kind of useful work they can get involved in!  The work was to help manage the reed beds in the bay of the lake by cutting back some of the regenerating willow and also to carry out repairs to the chestnut paling which helps to provide the reed beds with some protection from passing dogs.

Fencing on the Middlewood Way

This past Sunday SACV volunteers were out on the Middlewood Way, helping ranger Ed with repairing and replacing fencing.  Well done to everyone who came along to help out, learn some new skills and make this a productive day!

Fencing on the Pennine Way

SACV spent this weekend in the Peak District helping the Peak Park Conservation Volunteers with fence repair work on the Pennine Way above Edale.  Despite a bleak forecast of plenty of heavy rain, it stayed dry over both days to give us a very satisfying weekend!
